ABOUT THAPAR INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

Thapar University (TU) also known as Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, was established in 1956 in the city of Patiala, in south-eastern Punjab, northern India. It is 70km from Chandigarh airport.

It has grown rapidly since its conception and is now known as one of the best private engineering establishments in India. TU plans to set up two new campuses over the coming years: one near Chandigarh and one in Chhattisgarh for management and engineering courses.

Students can choose programs from the L.M. Thapar School of Management (LMTSOM), the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Mathematics, the School of Physics and Materials Science (SPMS), and the School of Energy and Environment.

The campus covers 250 hectares and facilities for students include a library, an athletics track, a gymnasium, a badminton hall, and a swimming pool complex. All students must register for sports activities every semester.

In 2014, TU signed an institutional partnership with Trinity College, Dublin to foster academic collaboration in undergraduate programs and research projects. This is just one aspect of TU’s efforts to contemporize and strengthen its global engagement.

The university city of Patiala has a population of about 400,000 and one of the highest number of vehicles per capita in India. The city dates back to 1763, when Baba Ala Singh, a Jat Sikh chieftain, constructed the Qila Mubarak, an 18th-century fort around which the city is now built.

Communications and Signal Processing

Research is underway on the design and development of software that generates implementations and solves estimation problems using Kalman filters and their variants. From a high-level mathematical description of a state estimation problem, the software aims to generate code that computes statistically optimal estimates using the appropriate estimation filters. Also being developed are motion analysis algorithms to find relevant motion parameters based on available information, in the presence of relatively high error rates in low SNR conditions.

Research is being carried out for the development of new circuit topologies for wireless communication and radar systems. Specific research topics include the design and development of miniaturized active integrated antennas, front-ends of wireless communication and radar systems including smart antenna systems; multi-band transceiver design, digital base-band signal processing for wireless communication, multi-band fractal antenna for satellite applications, analysis of radiation from multi-device high-gain amplifier, and interaction of active MMIC with the package.

Programs of Study

DA-IICT has played a pioneering role in developing innovative undergraduate programs in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in India since 2001. The pedagogy of the ICT discipline should make a well-integration of Information Technology, Communication Technology, Electronics Engineering, and Social Sciences courses with a solid grounding in Mathematics and Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, which a student cannot be trained in conventional Computer Science & Engineering or Electronics and Communication Engineering alone.

In recent times, the institute has introduced another undergraduate program in Mathematics and Computing (MnC) that provides a strong foundation in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science followed by interdisciplinary electives and project works in industry-relevant areas.
